GARY BASSI - INSAAF (OUT NOW)
Buzz Punjabi recently caught up with the US based Punjabi singer Gary Bassi to talk about his latest release "Insaaf," his previous releases and much more. Check it out below!
For those of our readers who don't know you, please introduce yourself.
Hello Everyone. My name is Gary Bassi and I also go by Dhadiboy. I have been connected to our Punjabi folk music and folk dance Bhangra my whole life. I have previously learned classical Kirtan from Prof. Dalbir Singh Ji and still studying Dhadi art from Dhadi Ustad Kamaljit Singh Ji Sanghera. You can catch me performing live boliyan with Bhangra teams in almost every live Bay Area Bhangra competitions.
Your previous releases include "Mirza," produced by Harvi Bhachu, and "Jharaai," produced by Rav-E, which have done fairly well worldwide. Tell us something about the experience you had working with the people you did on those projects and how was the global response to them?
My first project was actually an old song by Surinder Shinda ji. It is one of my favorite songs of him and me and Harvi Bachu sung it regularly in our jamming sessions at his studio. It just happened that one day Niku Bachu from Bol Punjab de walked in and asked us to record the song. So, We ended up recording and releasing it under Bol Punjab De banner. That one track got me recognized as a singer and brought lots of music producer and writer’s attention to me. For that track we were featured on Bobby Friction show and it was because of that track that I was reached out by a lyricist Sukhi Gosal who penned the Song Jharaai. Hearing the lyrics to Jharaai, I knew it had a really good Bhangra vibe to it and only person we thought could really do best music for that song was Ravi Sandu (Rav-E). We made another accomplishment when Gurwrinder Singh Bhaji from The Town Media (Punjab) liked our project and decided to connect us with BoomBox media and Happy Joshi Bhaji. So far it has been a great pleasure working with everyone and I am thankful that along this journey I got to meet so many good and talented people.
Who has influenced you into pursuing music? Do you have any idols?
My wife Neeraj Bassi is my biggest motivation. Behind every man’s success is a great supportive woman. She is my inspiration and my biggest critics as well. Any song that I do, I first run it by her and see if she approves it. My two biggest idols are both of my teachers Prof. Dalbir Singh ji (Fremont) and Dhadi Ustad Kamaljit Singh Ji Sanghera (Bilga Wala Dhadi Jatha).
Do you think it's important for singers to learn music before they officially release anything?
Yes, I think it is very important to learn singing for all the singers.
What kind of music do you enjoy listening to? Who do you play in the car most often?
I love all kinda music but folk Punjabi Music, Ghazals, Dhadi Varran and Kirtan are my most favorites things to listen to. Most often, I will be playing Dhadi Daya Singh Dilbar, Gulam Ali, Surinder Shinda or Bhai Satvinder Singh.
How would you describe yourself using only one word?
Focused
Tell us something unique about yourself that we already don't know.
Along with music, I also have a degree in Mathematical Science and I am a trained fighter. I have been training Muay Thai (Martial Arts from Thai Land) for almost 6 years.
If you had the chance to collaborate with any one artist in the world, who would it be?
I admire and appreciate working with local talents and people that can actually sing live. I think Amitpal (DSP) Bhaji from Canada has that charismatic voice.
Tell us something about your latest track that has just released today titled "Insaaf." How did this track come about and why did you choose to do this song?
Our latest track Insaaf is something that we been planning to release on Vaisakhi day for a very long time. It’s a track dedicated to all the Shaeeds and talks about some of the issues that keep arising in Punjab.
Piracy is on the rise, making it hard for labels and artists to make a return on their investments. What role do you think we all play in this situation?
I think our role in this situation is that we should work hard and take small steps at a time. I see lots of people spending big bucks on their first track. Some of them make it but majority of them don’t. So I would say don’t try to cut corner. There is no easy way to success, just keep taking small steps, one at a time and one day you will achieve your goal.
