DSP - CHADRA (OUT SOON)
Buzz Punjabi had the chance to talk to a fresh, Canadian based talent DSP about his upcoming single "Chadra," releasing worldwide on Boombox Media very soon. Check it out below!
For those of our readers who don't know you, please introduce yourself.
Mere vallo saareya nu pyar bhari Sat shri akal. For those who don’t know me, my name is Amitpal aka DSP born and raised in small town called Balachaur near Nawanshahr, Punjab. I'm currently living in Surrey, BC. I had interest in singing and bhangra since I was in elementary school. But I started to focus on singing more seriously when I was in college. My first stage performance was in a college youth festival. I have always loved to sing folk like Kaliyan, Kavishri and Vaar.
Tell us something about your upcoming release "Chadra." How did this project come about and how was the experience for you?
It’s been a very long and rough journey for me to release “Chadra." I wrote this song back in 2010. But I couldn’t record it due to a lack of resources. Finally, we are all set to release this song. I am very much excited. We tried to keep that old school vibe in this song. It’s a pure bhangra track. The whole credit goes to some very good friends for making this happen.
By your look on the poster, you seem to be really influenced by Punjabi folk music and culture. Why do you think youngsters today are favoring pop over folk?
I think the whole Punjabi music industry is influenced by Punjabi folk music. Folk is the base of Punjabi music. In my opinion, pop is just a newer version of folk. Everyone likes something new and fresh. The young generation is favoring pop, because it’s the music they can relate to. They feel more connected, and that’s the purpose of music. Whatever kind of music people can relate to themselves is good music.
You're a songwriter yourself so you would understand how hard it can be to translate a melody into words. Do you think writers should deserve more credit in our industry?
I have had a really bad experience with song writers. Lots of popular songwriters don’t want to give their songs to new singers. I was so disappointed. Then I started writing myself. But I believe that this behavior is because songwriters don’t get enough credit. Not only song writers, every person who is involved in a song deserves credit.
What kind of music do you like listening to? Who do you play in the car most often?
I listen to almost everything. Folk, Pop, Hip Hop and sometimes Hindi and Ghazals too. I try to keep myself updated.
How would you describe yourself using only one word?
Honest
Tell us something unique about yourself that we already don't know.
I am a very good cook. I cook Punjabi food. I can also make round roti. Lol
If you had the chance to collaborate with any one artist in the world, who would it be?
Tru-Skool
