"I am really proud of UK Bhangra History" - Jhinda Music - An Exclusive Interview only on BuzzPunjabi
Buzz Punjabi recently caught up with a fresh, new music producer based in the UK - Jhinda Singh. Check it out below!
For those of our readers who don't know, briefly introduce yourself. Where are you from and how did you decide that producing music was right for you?
My name is Jhinda Music and I hail from the infamous London town! Raised in Southall I grew up fortunately being surrounded by Punjabi culture, language and music. The 2 words I would use to describe my sound are Folk and Electric. Becoming a music producer has been a natural progression, from musician to playing live for bands and artists, to recording in studios, and now to making my first EP! I endeavour to make fresh Bhangra music for all and promote true Punjabi values. My first EP named "Aad the Beginning" features 5 tracks. It was recorded in 2014 while on a backpacking trip around India.
Your first single titled "Gabru Boliyan" was alongside the powerhouses Balwinder Matowalia, Billa Ferozpuri, Jaswant Heera and Bakshi Billa. Tell us something about that track. What's changed since the time you released that track and until now?
The concept behind "Gabru Boliyan" was actually inspired by Tru-Skool's "Raw as Folk Boliyan." Having a live Bhangra team background pushed me to make a track that Bhangra teams could use in their performances. Every song/project I have released has been a learning curve, and I am still developing my style and sound and finding my team.
What's the first element that you judge when you're listening to any song - the vocals, music, or the lyrics?
The vocals - The vocal ties together a song. While all 3 are arguably just as important it is the vocal tone we hear first that attracts us to listen more.
UK was once the hub of Punjabi music; artists from all over the world were getting a platform from the UK. As we know, this designation went back to India earlier, and now Canada is owning the title in a greater sense. Would you like to see the Bhangra scene returning back to England?
Yes, I am really proud of UK Bhangra history. In my opinion the UK kick-started the whole Punjabi music industry. I grew up during the late 90s and early 2000s which was a golden era for UK Punjabi artists. I respect what people from other countries are doing, however I strongly believe the UK has the innovation to take things to the next level.
One artist that you would love to collaborate with. Who would it be?
Ustad Kuldeep Manak.
How important is it for someone to learn music before they start producing or singing?
Vital - learning Indian music theory is the key to understanding music full stop.
Share some of your plans for the future. What are we hearing next?
My next single is releasing this April. The title is "Watan Punjab" featuring the vocal talents of Anantpal Billa and lyrics by Bhinder Khanpuri. This is the final track on my debut EP and I have saved the best till last! This song pays homage to Punjab and was my first ever video shoot in India.
Jhinda's latest single - 'Teri Tohr' - featuring the powerhouse Bakshi Billa!
