Exclusive Interview with King Ricky
Buzz Punjabi recently caught up with a fresh, new talent, songwriter and vocalist - King Ricky. Check it out below!
Your latest release - "Raani" with vocals by Karan Sehmbi - has done really well worldwide. How do you feel about the response you're getting and how have you changed since the release?
"Raani" has done way better than I ever expected. I knew this song was different and had the potential to be a commercial success but somewhere I was also afraid of the fact that it was very poetic, and with the ongoing trend in the music industry, a lot of imagination or poetry is not being used. But I was given a lot of positive views by whoever heard the song before it was even released, and Karan sang it so beautifully, So I had mixed emotions. I haven't changed a lot as a person but yes I am overwhelmed with the love I'm getting through messages and video clips.
How did "Raani" come about? Where did the idea come from in the writing stage and how did you connect with Karan Sehmbi?
It happened over night. I was preparing with the list of songs I had that would suit Karan Sehmbi, as I knew his genre is mainly romantic. Suddenly the hook line of the song struck me in the head and I thought I should complete this song and add it to the list of the songs I was going to present to him. He didn't have a lot of time and I only sang 2 songs to him and by the end of the day, we finalized this song. I connected with him through a common friend who thought that my songs might be a good match for him.
What's the first element that you judge when you're listening to any song - the vocals, music, or the lyrics?
The first element is the feel of the song. Is the song delivering what it wants to deliver through its lyrics? So, you can say feel and lyrics would be the first element. Then comes the vocal and music, if anything better could've been done to make the song sound better.
Many people may or may not know this but you're also a vocalist yourself. You made your debut with the track "Sofi Jatt" back in 2017. In what way have you grown since that time to this moment where you're becoming a familiar figure among your fans?
Well, people around me know that I love singing a lot, and most of my songs are composed by me as well. I wrote "Sofi Jatt" for someone else but due to some reason they couldn't sing it. I didn't want to keep this song unreleased for too long. So I thought I should sing it and release the audio, because I really liked the essence of the song. Now I perform it at my live shows and people love it. With "Raani" a lot of people connected with me as supporters and fans, and I feel an extreme sense of responsibility to give even more quality songs to them as my work is being noticed now.
One artist that you would love to collaborate with. Who would it be?
I would love to collaborate with Amrinder Gill, because I know my lyrics would create some magic with his voice.
Every artist has a persona that we, as the listeners, see, and there is a character that most of the time is hiding within each and every artist. Do you consider yourself a writer, a vocalist, or both?
I would love to consider myself a writer more than a vocalist in the coming future. As of now I just want to be called an "expresser." I want people to listen to my lyrics and feel the soul of the song they're listening to.
Share some of your plans for the future. What are we hearing next?
We're working on a duet project, in which I'd be featuring as a singer as well. I have written the song and Sunny Bajaj has co-sung it. There are couple of other projects that are under preparation right now with famous singers, which I would reveal in the near future.
Any message you have for your fans out there?
The only message I have is: listen to good music, and songs are for your entertainment only. Don't let them impact you in a negative way. Thank you.
